PFAS Risk Assessment
Understand and manage PFAS risks — before they impact your project.
PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are persistent chemicals increasingly scrutinised by regulators. We provide staged PFAS risk assessments that help you understand if there's a problem, how big it is, and what to do about it — without overspending.
Step 1: Desk-Based PFAS Screening
✔ We review historical site use, including known PFAS sources (e.g. fire training areas, industrial uses, airports, landfills)
✔ We assess regulatory context, site sensitivity, and potential exposure pathways (soil, groundwater, surface water)
✔ We identify whether PFAS are likely to pose a risk to human health or the environment
✔ We provide a screening-level risk summary and clear recommendation on whether further investigation is needed
Step 2: Intrusive PFAS Investigation (If Required)
If desk-based screening indicates potential PFAS risk, we:
✔ Design a targeted soil and/or groundwater sampling strategy
✔ Use appropriate containers and laboratories to avoid PFAS cross-contamination
✔ Analyse PFAS concentrations against UK and international screening values
✔ Interpret results in line with current guidance (e.g. C819, Defra/EAs RAG updates)
✔ Provide pragmatic, commercially relevant advice on risk management or remediation
Typical Outcomes
✔ Confirmation that PFAS risks are negligible or manageable
✔ Identification of contamination hotspots requiring action
✔ Data to support planning, acquisition, or redevelopment
✔ Input to remediation strategies or water quality risk assessments
✔ Reduced regulatory risk through proactive, defensible assessment
